Tell us why you wanted your teeth straightening?
I had hated my teeth my whole life, was never offered braces by my dentist as a child and then when I was about 18/19 I changed my dentist, and asked about getting my teeth straightened and they said I would need 4 teeth extracting and train track braces for about 18 months to 2 years, which I thought no way! I always tried to cover my teeth my whole life to the extent that on my wedding day I had to instruct my photographer she was only allowed to take pictures from my left profile and non from my right profile because my teeth were far worse on that side and yes to have to have your wedding day dictated by your teeth as they were so crooked top and bottom, the top ones were the worst for me as they showed more than my bottom teeth. Every single day, every situation, every part of my life, my teeth, I was so conscious and aware of them. For any photos or videos I would try and hide my smile, hide my teeth, or if I had a smile I would make sure it was of my left profile, you won’t find a picture of me showing my right profile because they were so bad to me.
Why did you choose Six Month Smiles?
I have looked for many years at teeth straightening and I had not really found anything, I had seen Invisalign a couple of years ago, but looking at pictures on the internet, I didn’t think it would work because my teeth were so bad. I went to my regular dentist for my check-up which would have been about May to July time and they were advertising six month smiles, so I asked the dentist about it and she couldn’t tell me too much about it as they didn’t have the equipment and that they would call me back, but I am still waiting for that phone call.
What made you choose Precision Dental?
So because I had seen it advertised there I went home and when I didn’t hear anything I looked into it myself to try and find a dentist nearby that did it and I came across Precision Dental that did 3 different teeth straightening systems; most of the others were doing just one system, and I thought well surely it’s better that they offered a choice and that they are not just pushing one type. So I rang Precision Dental up and spoke to Elaine on reception, who was really friendly and gave me all the information I needed on the phone, got me an appointment booked in pretty quickly, within a couple of days I think it was and then spoke to Stephen and again because he talked about the options, said the Inman Aligner wouldn’t be suitable, talked about Six Month Smiles and Invisalign, and he said how committed would you be to make sure you are wearing the retainers all the time for Invisalign, and I was a little bit unsure. Although I hated my teeth, I was a bit worried about will I be strict with it, and Stephen did say that if there was any doubt there, then perhaps the Six Months Smiles would be the better option for the best results.
How long did your treatment take?
My treatment took 5 months and 2 weeks, Stephen had said the average is between 6 and 9 months and that mine could go a little over, and I definitely thought mine would be 9 months or more with how bad my teeth were, never in a million years did I think that they would be done for Christmas, but yes, just 5 months and 2 weeks.
How did it impact on your everyday life, did you have to change anything?
I did change what I ate, in the information I was given about what things to avoid, I was pretty good in trying to stick to the advice so I didn’t break the brackets off, so yes I think I did pretty good in avoiding those things. Actually, initially I think went totally the other way buying loads of mashed potatoes and soups etc, which are still sat in the cupboard, I bought loads of things like that because I thought that I wasn’t going to be able to eat anything solid, but I was absolutely fine – it was just about being sensible not eating things like granola or biting into apples and things.
Within the first 2 weeks I seriously thought about coming and having them taken off because they were hurting me, but I looking back I just didn’t think about that there would be any discomfort, well I did really but I thought just get them on and just deal with it, but again because of how much mine needed to move of course they would hurt a little bit, as they had been there all my life and had to move so much. But after a couple of weeks I was absolutely fine, I remember thinking about it’s what I really wanted so badly, so I could manage with this no problem.
Making sure that I had my interdental brushes with me all the time, as one time I went out for a Sunday lunch a couple of weeks after I had had them put on, and I had eaten and could feel it all stuck in my braces and I didn’t have anything with me, so made sure when I got home I put plenty of the brushes into my handbag, so that if I was out I could always clean my braces.
How do you feel now?
Amazing, I haven’t stopped smiling ever since, my daughter and my husband again said it’s fantastic, they can’t believe how straight they are and just not having to be self-conscious AT ALL about them whereas in the past if I was having a conversation with someone I would be really conscious thinking of no they are looking at my teeth, as I was really so self-conscious of bad my teeth it was unreal and I just can’t believe it and just can’t stop smiling. To not have to think at all now, if the camera comes out and I can think I don’t need to hide my teeth at all or go for left profile photo’s, it just doesn’t matter now, just take my picture because I don’t care anymore, it’s the best thing I have ever done other than getting married and having my little girl, wish I had known about it sooner.
