I know you think I’m a nuisance asking questions about your medical history every time you come to see me or one of the dentists but it is really important. Some illnesses have a direct impact on your mouth whilst sometimes it is advised not to have treatment whilst you are having some medical treatments such as chemotherapy, but it is recommended that you do come in for an oral health check before the treatment starts.
It may also surprise you to know that over 500 medications can contribute to a reduction in the amount of saliva that you produce which can lead to a dry mouth.
Saliva is really important for keeping our mouths clean and neutralising the acid that our mouth produces every time we eat anything. So if you think you have a dry mouth mention it to me next time you come in as I can give you some advice to help make thing a little easier or we may prescribe high fluoride toothpaste which can help to protect your teeth.
Here are some hints and tips to help manage a dry mouth:
Take regular sips of still water without any squash even if it says no added sugar it will still be acidic and swill it around the mouth to wet all the mouth before swallowing it
Some people find sucking ice chips help
Sugar free sweets or sugar free chewing gum might help to stimulate your saliva flow
Always have sauce or gravy with your food as it will help with swallowing
Saliva substitutes (mouthwash/sprays/lozenges) are available to buy or some can be prescribed by your doctor
It is also really important that you spit out the residual toothpaste after you have brushed your teeth but don’t rinse out with water or mouthwash straight after as that will wash away all the fluoride which helps to strengthen your teeth
Do you regularly suffer from one mouth ulcer after another?
It could be that you are allergic to sodium lauryl sulphate(SLS) commonly found in toothpastes. Here are a few toothpastes commonly found in chemists or the supermarket that don’t contain SLS so give one a try to see if it makes a difference;
- Sensodyne Repair & Protect
- Sensodyne ProNamel Mint Essence Toothpaste
- Sensodyne Daily Care Original
- Sensodyne ProNamel
We look forward to seeing you in the dental practice in Rotherham soon.
